OMG YOU ARE AWESOME!!! I’m moving to Spain in 3 weeks to teach English with the Auxiliares de Conversación program and I’m really starting to freak out about where to find a place to live since I know NOTHING about Madrid. This guide is SO HELPFUL!!! THANK YOU!!!

What an excellent guide to living in Madrid. Thank you for sharing your insight. I wish I had come across this webpage before moving here.

The only advice I can add is that people should not rule out supposedly “posh” neighbourhoods such as Salamanca on the grounds of expense.

At least in the current economic crisis, it is possible to find reasonably priced properties if you look around and it doesn’t actually cost any more to live here than somewhere less central and you can save on public transport by walking.

And it’s not even that posh. Most of my neighbours look like pretty ordinary middle-class citizens. And we even have a few discount supermarkets.

Great article! I am an American student and am looking to move to Madrid for graduate school in the coming year. If all goes well, I hope to make my move official and start a life in Madrid. Spain is such a beautiful place!

Thanks again for all the great information! Also, I see the Spanish economy is still in tough shape. For a young English/Spanish-speaking professional with a Master’s degree in HR, do you think it will be difficult to find work?
